About Us
The Virginia Beach Police Sergeants’ Association (PSA) was created from its parent organization, the Virginia Beach Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in 1985. Initially the PSA membership was restricted to Sergeants only, but eventually we opened our membership to include Lieutenants and renamed the association the Virginia Beach Police Supervisors’ Association. We are currently considering also allowing Captains to join.
One of the PSA’s primary missions is to remain active in the community and to promote a better working relationship between the police and the city we serve. In 2009 we organized a Gang Awareness Forum along with the Latino Police Officers Association. During the winter holidays we team up with the Virginia Beach Police Chaplain’s Association to provide food for needy families, at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Additionally, at Christmas we sponsor the “Blue Santa Cop for Kids” program, which assists needy families in buying Christmas presents and food for the holidays. We have also organized Christmas parties for the Virginia Beach Children’s Respite Center, ensuring the severely handicapped children have a wonderful Christmas. The PSA holds an Bike Rodeo annually, in conjunction with the Police Department, where we give free bicycle safety helmets to all participants and conduct bicycle safety inspections. Participants ride through an obstacle course under the watchful eye of a police officer. All the participants are entered in a raffle to win new bicycles. The PSA contributes to various local, state and national charitable organizations on a regular basis, both law enforcement and non-law enforcement related.
The PSA is also very active in the political process. We keep open lines of communication with both our local City Council members, as well as our members in the Virginia General Assembly. We endorse candidates on a regular basis, who we feel will best promote public safety in our community, as well as those who will support our public safety members. We would like to see Virginia Beach remain one of the safer communities in the country and we would like to continue to recruit and retain the best and brightest candidates for the position of police officer.
The primary goal of the PSA is providing the citizens of Virginia Beach with the best possible police service, through leadership, education and cooperation with the community we serve.
